Medical Information & Clinical UseThe Fentanyl Transdermal Patch is a potent opioid agonist indicated for the management of severe, persistent, and chronic pain that requires continuous, around-the-clock opioid administration. It is a preferred choice for patients who are already opioid-tolerant and where alternative treatment options are inadequate.
+1
Primary Indications: Management of chronic intractable pain associated with advanced-stage oncology (Cancer), degenerative joint diseases, and persistent neurological pain.
Mechanism of Action: Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid approximately 100 times more potent than morphine. The transdermal system provides a steady, controlled release of the medication through the skin into the bloodstream over a 72-hour period.
Dosage Strength: This patch delivers 50 micrograms of Fentanyl per hour.
As a powerful narcotic pain relief agent, Fentanyl must be used with strict adherence to medical guidance.
Common Side Effects: Nausea, vomiting, constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). Some patients may experience mild redness or itching at the application site.
Central Nervous System Effects: Mental clouding, confusion, and sedation.
Serious Risks: The most critical risk is Respiratory Depression (dangerously slow breathing). Other severe reactions include severe hypotension (low blood pressure), bradycardia, and physical dependence or addiction if misused.
Heat Sensitivity: External heat sources (like heating pads or saunas) can significantly increase drug absorption, leading to a fatal overdose.
Avoid Use In: Patients with acute or post-operative pain, severe respiratory insufficiency, or those who are not already opioid-tolerant.
Pediatric Safety: Extreme caution must be taken to keep patches away from children, as accidental exposure can be fatal.
Disposal: Used patches still contain active medication and must be folded and disposed of securely as per medical protocols.
